Domestic violence and sexual assault is a very real and touchy subject for so many people. It’s sad to see so many people go through this especially our young children We as parents need to talk to our children more about domestic violence and sexual assault. We need to let them know that it is okay to come talk to us if they become a victim of such crimes. Yes, talking about these issues can be very frightening and uncomfortable for some but if we don’t we continue to let this happen. Most of all reasons as to why domestic violence and sexual assault continue to happen is because we fail to talk about them, to recognize the red flags (warning signs) and to create a healthy supportive environments in our homes, schools and communities.
Studies shows that (taken off of nomore.org website):
- 1 in 4 women experience violence from their partners in their lifetimes.
- 1 in 3 teens experience sexual or physical abuse or threats from a boyfriend or girlfriend in one year.
- 1 in 6 women are survivors of sexual assault.
- 1 in 5 men have experienced some form of sexual victimization in their lives.
- 1 in 4 women and 1 in 6 men were sexually abused before the age of 18.
