There is nothing quite as sweet as waking up on a work day and realizing you have a day off. You may have been waiting all week or even all month for this moment, but knowing that the kids are at school and you don’t have to be at work is one of the best feelings in the world.
If you’re spending all of your time being productive and killing it in your career, then you need to stop running full speed towards your goals just for 24 hours and take that down time that you’ve been desperate for. Taking a break and finding a way to relax and enjoy your day off from work can be everything to help you to reset and recharge to keep moving forward. We all need a break from time to time and whether that means sitting in front of the computer to have a go at Spinni, or spending the entire day doom-scrolling in bed on your phone, it’s your time and you get to choose what to do with it! So in this article, we’re going to go through ten ways that you can have fun on your day off instead of just wasting the day.
1. Use this time for that luxury self-care. We’re not talking about washing your face or having a shower. We’re talking about scheduling a facial, getting a blowout, taking one of those long relaxing spa days. Once you drop the kids off at school, you have 5 1/2 or maybe even 6 delicious hours of freedom. So take a fitness class or go to a cooking class and make a nutrient-rich meal. In fact, take yourself out to a restaurant and have somebody else cook it for you. All of these things are self-care and they make you feel great.
2. Go and visit somebody you love. Whether it’s a family member in an old age care home or you’re going to go and visit somebody who just also happens to have a day off work, spending time with people that is meaningful can be taken up with all of the days that you have to be productive at work. So now that you have a day off, take the time to have a meaningful and fun visit with your family. You can even plan a day out visiting distant family and setting up an outing with a niece or a nephew that you haven’t seen for a while. If you want to make the most of your time, consider adding in a few fun activities.
3. Rest. A great way to have fun on your day off is to rest as much as you can during that day. Rest is just as productive as anything else that you could be doing because your body is going to need it to be able to catch up. If you’re spending all of your time on your feet running around warehouses or in a very physical job, then rest is one of the best things you can do and one of the best ways you can have fun on a day off of work.
4. Go shopping. You don’t necessarily have to splurge out a load of money. You could spend the day window shopping if you want to, and make a mental list of all the things that you’d like to buy. But an afternoon of walking around the shops to have a look around and take your time pouring over things is a great way to have fun on your day off. Everybody knows that when you have to bring the kids with you to go shopping, it’s not the easiest thing to do and it’s not relaxing in the slices. But going by yourself is an entirely different game.
5. Spend your day volunteering. For you, it may be fun for you to spend your time giving back on your day off. It doesn’t mean you’re working, but you get to immerse yourself in the community and do something that matters. Sometimes we need to feel like we matter. And on your day off of work, what better time is there to choose the activity that you’re volunteering for and make that conscious decision to help somebody else?
6. Get stuck into some gardening. Getting your hands dirty can really feel rejuvenating and a little bit of time in nature. Exercising your green thumb can give you a refresh in a way that you didn’t expect to get. You could be tending to herbs in the window boxes, or you could contribute to a community garden. Either way, gardening is a great use of your time and it gives you a moment to feel like you’ve achieved something.
7. Be a tourist for a day. When was the last time you took a look in the city that you live in? Sometimes there could be treasures or days out hiding right under your nose in your hometown. If you’ve never taken the time to be a tourist and go to the spots that the tourists would pick out, then it’s time to do that. Go to a museum or a zoo or even an art gallery. You’ll find yourself feeling like them and most well educated tourists in town.
8. Cook something delicious. Now that you have the time, you could bulk cook all of those meals you’ve been saving on your phone. Spend the day in the kitchen watching your favorite TV shows and cooking up a storm.
9. Pick up a hobby that you’ve let slip. Remember that time that you bought all of those acrylics and those canvases and then you left them in the cupboard and didn’t use them? Do you remember that time you attended one rock climbing class and never went back? Maybe used today to pick up a couple of those old hobbies and restore yourself. It doesn’t have to be a high energy hobby, it just has to be something fun.
10. Upgrade something in your home. Pick one of the many jobs that you’ve written on the job list and spend today doing it. You won’t regret the time that you took to make your home beautiful.
