Some people may not know this, however, when you’re trying for a baby there are some things that you can do beforehand that can affect your fertility, and the health of you and your baby.
Let’s have a look at some of the things you can do before you even start trying for a baby:
1. Don’t Worry
This is number one because stress is a cause of some people not conceiving. However, it’s also important to remember that for some couples conceiving naturally sometimes doesn’t happen, and this is okay. There are some things that you can do to help if this happens to you such as using IVF with a great first cycle IVF success rates or considering adoption.
2. Stop Smoking
Smoking affects your fertility in both women and men. If you stop smoking now rather than planning to stop once you are pregnant, it will improve your chance of conceiving. If you haven’t stopped by the time you are pregnant, it’s important you speak to your healthcare provider and get the help you need to stop.
3. Start Taking Folic Acid Now
This needs to build up in your body in order to provide maximum protection for your baby. Many women conceive quicker than they think (within a month) so try to take folic acid at least two months before you stop your contraception. You need to then take folic acid until you are 12 weeks pregnant.
4. Eat Really Well
Another way to prep your body for pregnancy is to start eating really well. The best foods include unsaturated fats, vegetable proteins, whole grains, and of course, fruits and vegetables. Your diet before and after both affect the development of your baby.
5. Maintain A Healthy Weight
Your body mass index is something that used your weight and height to calculate if your weight is healthy or not. The ideal BMI is between 18.5 and 24.9. If you have a BMI over 25 then your fertility and risk of complications can increase. On the other hand, if your BMI is below 18.5 it can also cause the same.
6. Keep Active
Keep Yourself active by completing regular, moderate exercise before and after you conceive. It will help your fertility and it will also benefit you during pregnancy in the long-term.
7. Stop Drinking Alcohol
Binge drinking is defined as the consumption of alcohol that is above the recommended amount, excessive drinking can easily damage your fertility. On both the men and women’s side. Because of how damaging drinking can be during pregnancy, it’s actually recommended that women stop drinking before they conceive.
8. Keep Up With Your Cervical Screening Test
Between the ages of 25 and 49, you need to make sure you have a screening test every three years. It’s best for you to get tested before you get pregnant, this is because they aren’t conducted through pregnancy.
These eight things are what you should ideally stop before you thinking about starting a family. You should always talk to your doctor beforehand too.
