Why do we keep doing bad habits when we know the things we need to do in order to stop them? In the end it’s down to one thing, a lack of discipline. Into that tie many different things. We know that doing these bad habits is the easy route. We see that doing the healthy thing is going to require not just a decent amount of effort today but for the rest of your days. In that sense we tend to flake and even after a few days or weeks of trying, we get back into that same awful routine. It’s a strange conversation to have with yourself when you ask yourself why aren’t you stopping yourself from doing something you know is hurting you in some way? Many of us shy away from this psychological battle that we know we’ll have to face if we want to get better. So what ways can you confront your issues?
Eating is comfort?
As human beings we have many different senses. These senses can be something we enjoy or simply things we use to help us in our day. For example our sense of smell isn’t really useful for 99% of the things we do throughout the day. But it is useful for when we want to avoid eating something that is clearly off or when there’s a fire in the kitchen. Eating is something we do to maintain our energy levels and thus life itself. However we enjoy taste, we get a shot of endorphins when we eat something that is sugary, fatty and full of carbs. This is a byproduct of what our body needs to do to force us to eat regularly. We have to enjoy the foods that keep us alive. However, we often abuse this pleasure and end up overweight. Comfort eating is not a good coping technique for stress and depression because it’s a momentary high. So rather than using the high of junk food to make yourself feel better, find something else that gives you that same pleasure such as sports, exercise or a craft of some kind.
Start off slow
Going cold turkey will make many people stumble, fall and then get back on the horse. The trouble is, they get back on the wrong horse.
