If youβre not actively trying to make sure your children get a good education at school, then the chances are they could be having a hard time with it. There are many parts of the school that can leave your child at a disadvantage, and if you fail to acknowledge it – it might stay like that for the entirety of their education. Problems that might seem obvious to you may not seem that way for your kids as theyβve grown up with them, and without you spotting them, they may not even discover an issue until theyβre an adult.
Itβs your responsibility as a parent to show your kids that learning is something to be enjoyed, and something that should never be passed up. Curiosity to find out more is very helpful if theyβre going to have a good time in the education system.
Learn alongside them
At a young age, learning can be quite overwhelming, as theyβre suddenly having to intake so much information that theyβre not used to. This can lead them to feel stressed and struggle in certain classes – which is where you come in. Being there for your kids can help to make sure they get a different take on things and gives them much more opportunity to ask questions and go over what theyβve missed.
If youβre actively learning the same kind of things that theyβre learning, you can help them whenever theyβre having trouble with homework or class in general. If they know that they can just ask you things that theyβve had difficulties with, it would make their school life a lot less stressful.
Do some teaching at home
It helps to go above and beyond if you know your kids are having a hard time at school, and some parents take it upon themselves to do some extra teaching for their kids when at home. Of course, this can be quite a chore for your kids if they would rather be doing something else – but you donβt have to make it boring. There are plenty of resources you can get to match the syllabi, and you can easily structure your own lessons using the resources of professionals.
You can use this as an opportunity to give your kids a little more and get them ahead of their learning, rather than letting them feel like theyβre falling behind.
Turn reading into a bonding activity
If you wanted to make reading more fun and interactive for them, you could turn it into a game or bonding activity for the two of you. If you associate reading with fun, then your kids will naturally find it easier to enjoy learning when theyβre at school.
Let your child dream
Motivation is important when it comes to doing something tedious, and giving your children that motivation is important. If your kids are growing up with the idea that theyβre not going to have a choice in the career theyβll end up with, or that they have no future in the things they enjoy – it may stop them from trying. You need to make sure your kids are able to think about what they want to be and work towards it. Even from a young age, itβs not a good idea to push ideas onto them.
Let your kids talk about their struggles
One of the reasons kids shy away from learning is because it can be difficult at times. If they just arenβt getting something or are struggling to pay attention in class, then it can make the overall experience quite stressful and sometimes overwhelming. Talk to your kids about these things and find out what it is that theyβre having a hard time with. You can actively try to fill in these gaps and make sure they get the education and attention they need when it comes to certain topics.
Lead by example
Another great way to instill a passion for learning into your children is to learn by example. Show them that itβs a fun opportunity, and often express your curiosity to learn more about things. If youβre often showing your willingness to learn, then it will help them to take on that same trait. Leading by example is often a great way to help them learn and enjoy things.
Try out educational games
There are many different ways you can teach a subject, and there are many different ways you can learn something. We donβt always agree on the best ways to learn, and it can make certain approaches to teaching quite difficult for the student to take in. If you approached it with an educational game, then it could be easier to give your children more enthusiasm for the subject. Educational games are typically very interactive and put the player in charge of what happens, encouraging learning to allow them to get further into the game.
Look out for disabilities
The difficulties that your children are experiencing at school arenβt always avoidable. Learning can be hard when there are other factors preventing you from being able to effectively take in information. Conditions like ADHD can make focusing in class and paying attention very difficult, and it would be recommended to look out for signs of this and make sure that itβs treated or diagnosed. Getting a diagnosis can help to ensure that your children are getting the attention they need while theyβre learning.
Reward achievements
Children can easily be motivated by achievements, and it serves as more than just a carrot on the stick. Youβre associating rewards with hard work, and it will help them to put their head down more often to study and work hard on the things that theyβre passionate about. Itβs not just about the reward, but getting your kids used to working hard for what they want and need. The recognition and pride that you should your kids when they achieve something can also help them to strive for more at school.
