Marketing Tricks To Make Your Product Feel Premium

If you want to charge customers premium prices, your product needs to be high quality. However, you also need to convince customers that your product is high quality via your marketing. This involves making your product look and feel luxurious to justify the price tag. There are many ways that you can do this. Below are just a few examples of ways to make a product feel premium.

Adopt the right color scheme

Luxury products should never incorporate bright neon colors. Instead, opt for soft pastel colors (like soft pink and lavender) or deep colors (like burgundy and navy blue). These colors have a long history of being associated with wealth. Silver and gold can also create a luxury feel, but can also look tacky if used in the wrong settings. By far the safest and most universal premium color is black – in fact ‘black label’ has become a term to define any product that is premium.

Consider serif fonts

When it comes to using fonts in your marketing, consider using serif fonts to create a sense of elegance and sophistication. These include fonts like Times New Roman, Garamond and Georgia. Some sans serif fonts can still provide a luxury feel (Chanel and Calvin Klein both use sans serif fonts in their logo), but generally speaking serif fonts are better at communicating a sense of luxury (e.g. Tiffany & Co, Gucci and Rolex).

Delivery a sensory experience with your packaging

Premium packaging is often designed to create a multi-sensory experience when handling and opening it. This helps a product to feel more developed and more elite. Sticker paper and embossed card can help to create added texture. Sounds can meanwhile be introduced through crinkly tissue paper, while perfume scents can also be sprayed into the box. Other packaging tricks to make a product feel more luxurious include using heavier packaging or using boxes with hinged lids.

Use round figures for pricing

How you can display the pricing can also impact how the product is perceived. If you want a $500 product to come across cheap and affordable, it’s customary to drop a dollar – $499 feels cheaper than it is because many of us will round it down to $400 in our head. With premium products, the opposite strategy is often better. Displaying a price as $500.00 makes the product appear more high-end and luxurious. Products like jewelry and designer clothing will often use this pricing format.

Provide detailed product descriptions

Whereas cheaper products are often bought on impulse, premium products are typically planned purchases. Those who choose to buy premium products are often more knowledgeable about the product they are buying and therefore care more about the added details that make a product better or unique. It’s therefore important to provide detailed product descriptions when selling products online. Don’t be afraid to use technical jargon to showcase your own expertise. Using more flowery vocabulary can also help when selling premium products: ‘sea salt and balsamic vinegar potato chips’ sound much more luxurious than ‘salt and vinegar chips’.
