When you were a kid, did it take a lot of energy and reminders from your parents to brush and floss? Honestly, just about every child is guilty of this. But as you know, as a parent, convincing your child to take their oral health seriously can sometimes feel like a challenging task.
It’s just how children, if they truly don’t understand something or find it boring, just don’t want to do it. It’s similar to that of a healthy diet; they don’t like it, and they don’t understand until they learn why it’s important. However, instilling good dental habits from an early age is crucial for their overall well-being. Honestly, you need to start as soon as possible so they can pick up long-term healthy habits.
But what can parents do? Sure, reminding them or watching them do it might need to be done, but again, the whole point is for them to understand that this is needed, and they need to pick up this responsibility for themselves. Well, here are some effective strategies to finally get your kid to prioritize and take charge of their oral health.
There Needs to be Positive Associations
Before you start taking your kid to the dentist, watching them brush their teeth, and so on, try to start by creating positive associations for them. So, why not let your child pick their own toothpaste flavor? Just simply allowing them to choose a toothpaste they enjoy can make the brushing experience more enjoyable and foster a positive attitude toward oral care. Why not let them pick their toothbrush out, too? Actually, how about you go as far as making the dental routine fun? This should be an enjoyable experience for them, so why not play some music, be silly, or do some dances while brushing your teeth?
Address Any Potential Concerns
Maybe they don’t do it or enjoy it due to fear. Honestly, when it comes to dental hygiene, there is a lot of fear that quickly builds up. So, if your child expresses fears or concerns about dental care, address them with empathy. There needs to be open communication and an understanding of their anxieties; it’s really the only way that you can help alleviate any fears they may have about oral health practices.
Normalize Dental Check-Ups
The dentist is one of the biggest fears for kids, and this usually carries into adulthood, too. This one is pretty easy; all you really need to do is start dental visits early since this can normalize the experience and reduce anxiety for your kids.
Make Sure the Routine is Consistent
You need to remember consistency is key! So, when it comes to forming habits. Ideally, it’s best to establish a regular routine for oral care, including morning and bedtime brushing. Plus, just by having a set schedule helps make oral hygiene a natural and non-negotiable part of their daily activities.
Positive Reinforcement is Key
At the end of the day, this is going to help the most for creating strong habits. So, be sure to praise your child for their efforts in taking care of their teeth. Plus, positive reinforcement, such as verbal encouragement or small rewards, can go a long way in motivating them to continue practicing good oral hygiene habits.
