Working at home throws up enough challenges as it is, but when you’ve got the kids home and the family around you, it can be a lot harder. Especially when they’re all riled up due to Christmas on the horizon. Everyone has a different home life. Some will have less kids, more space, better equipment etc., but there are some things which can help everyone working from home. Pick a tip and see if it works, especially if the kids are already home with you. Remember, although this may take time, it’ll increase your productivity in general terms so it’s worth the investment.
Get Them Cleaning
Sounds impossible, doesn’t it? Not if you dress it up properly. Tell them that it’s the big before Christmas clean. Incentivize it as much as you can. This way you can really get a lot out of them. Of course, stuff like window cleaning can be left to the professionals but they can at least start to clean the place up ready for decorations and celebrations. When they’re doing this, and thinking about what great presents are going to drop into their lap, you can think about making some money and knuckling down without any main distractions. Productivity will improve performance and you can sail into the festive period feeling a bit better about yourself.
Get The Right Tools
It’s really important that you get the right tools for what you’re trying to do. The distraction of people around you can be mitigated if you’ve got the right tools for the job. For a start think about noise cancelling headphones if you’re having to work close to a TV or people chatting or kids playing. They range in cost but can be a brilliant focus tool. Check your internet connectivity, work on boosting it so you can get work done faster. A Wi-Fi booster might be pertinent if you’re far from the router, if you’re still getting issues, try and use an ethernet cable. Same for the laptop you use, make sure it’s updated to the most recent version and that all the programs you use are up to speed. Keep things working for you so you don’t get as frustrated and can work happily. Productivity is driven by yourself, but having the right tools isn’t going to do you any harm.
Get Dedicated Space
It’s important to get the disconnect from the usual family life. Keeping separate from the bed and the sofa etc., is important so try to get yourself somewhere separate from where the chatting and action is going on. This is easier said than done in some situations when homes are smaller and space at a premium, but it’s not like you’re trying to promote an OnlyFans. You’ll likely be on a laptop, so just find a quiet corner. If you’re serious you can lay the law down early on. A “don’t bother me in this room from this time” kind of rule works well especially if you’re on the phone all of the time.
